SITE NEWS: 2021 Housekeeping Stats

NFL Offseason – We’ve updated all of the 2021 DVOA and DYAR numbers on the site with all of the league’s post-season stat changes in play by official play, like a handful of games ranging from scrambles to regular runs or vice poured. We also corrected an error that existed in the 2021 special teams numbers during the season; the fix brings all 2021 Special Teams ratings a little closer to zero. The “DVOA from week X” numbers are updated retroactively with this fix for all of 2021.
The changes to DVOA here are quite small, but a few teams have changed in the overall DVOA standings. Green Bay edged Seattle at No. 8, while Pittsburgh edged Chicago at No. 23.
A change we made do not make concerns SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. DVOA has adjustments for indoor play in all three phases of the game. Currently, we have SoFi Stadium coded as a “warm weather” stadium rather than a dome. It’s a strange hybrid: SoFi has a roof but is open on the sides, so it has weather effects. I did an analysis of the statistics of the last two years (you can read about it here), interviewed readers and even spoke to people in the Rams front office and there wasn’t enough evidence to push things one way or the other. So we’ll leave SoFi as the outdoor stadium in DVOA, for now, and gather another year’s worth of data (two seasons, since there are two teams) before making a final decision. SoFi’s move to a dome would require retroactively updating the 2020-21 numbers as well as the 2022 numbers. The change would make the Rams and Chargers look better on defense, but worse on offense and on special teams.
