Working days: Flexible 5 from 7 and 2 from 7

A number of term positions (until July 31, 2022) are available within the Housekeeping and Cleaning Services team.

  • X6 20 hours per week (5 days a week), working hours between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.
  • X1 15 hours per week (5 days a week), working hours between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., mainly Monday to Friday 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.
  • X1 10 hours per week (5 out of 7), working hours between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., mainly Monday to Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • X2 12 hours per week (2 days of 7), working hours between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., mainly Saturday and Sunday
  • X2 10 hours per week (2 days of 7), working hours between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., mainly Saturday and Sunday
  • X1 7 hours per week (2 days of 7), working hours between 6am and 10pm, mainly Saturday and Sunday

Multiple contracts will be considered up to a maximum of 35 hours per week.

The department and the purpose of the role

The Estates and Facilities Branch provides a number of essential services to Durham University and is responsible for the management, maintenance and development of the infrastructure and real estate fabric of the various campuses, including:

  • maintain and regularly review a maintenance program that takes into account the short, medium and long-term needs of all University buildings and grounds;
  • implement the works identified and financed under the various maintenance programs and operate a system to meet day-to-day needs, including the provision of after-hours emergency service;
  • provide a professional and technical service to the University for the design, construction and supply of new buildings and adaptation works to existing buildings;
  • identify and record space usage and advise on ways to increase space usage;
  • property and asset management;
  • the acquisition and disposal of assets related to the built environment;
  • procurement and management of utilities and services;
  • provide postal, delivery and security arrangements and advice to the University; and
  • providing a wide range of client-facing services, including: contract management; manage relationships with domains and facilities; housekeeping and cleaning, business resilience, event management; reception assistance service; college retail; business support; health and security; and management information.

The Housekeeping and Cleaning Services Assistant will provide a range of cleaning/housekeeping services on University premises, including cleaning and maintenance of facilities, offices and common areas, used by students, University employees and commercial customers.

Main responsibilities

  • Perform a defined set of tasks or procedures within a team to provide responsive service to stakeholders.
  • Perhaps indirect and/or direct service with stakeholders.
  • Follow instructions from line manager or supervisor to identify what and how to perform a limited set of tasks or processes.
  • As instructions arise, assist team members by stepping in to provide support.
  • Learn the correct methods and tasks on the job.
  • Learn and follow general health, safety and security procedures in the service area covered by Occupational Health and Safety Guidelines, in the workplace.
  • Use a range of equipment, tools and resources, digital devices, software and apps as needed.
  • Communicate with line managers, supervisors, team members, other staff, students and visitors in person or using electronic tools and applications.
  • Assist team members in providing front line service to students, staff or visitors.

Role Responsibilities

  • Learn how to deliver physical services to meet regulatory and statutory guidelines and protocols.
  • Maintain internal and external physical environments, buildings and services in a safe and secure operating condition.
  • Use a range of equipment, tools and resources after certification and supervision to deliver services.
  • Assist team members in ensuring safety, security, maintenance and upkeep of systems, buildings, equipment and facilities.
  • Ensure own work is performed in accordance with task and environment specific risk assessments.
  • Where indicated, wear and use protective equipment and clothing to perform tasks.
  • Any other reasonable task.

Role specific requirements

  • Adopt and promote a flexible approach to work and be willing to cover absences, with reasonable notice.
  • Competent to work under minimal direct supervision with designated local assignments and liaise as necessary with appropriate staff members.
  • The role will require a physical manual handling element, which may include lifting and transporting equipment and deliveries.
  • Work evenings and weekends, as required by the company.
  • Attend all training and refresher courses as required.
